Here's a fun little tip: You can open most Sentex key pad-access doors by typing in the following code:

***00000099#*

The first *** are to enter into the admin mode, 000000 (six zeroes) is the factory-default password, 99# opens the door, and * exits the admin mode (make sure you press this or the access box will be left in admin mode!)

I'm not sure how prevalent they are, but here in San Francisco, Sentex building access systems seem to be the most popular.

@jim: what do you mean, WTF? As in, David was wrong to post this? As in, Sentex was wrong to provide this feature? Or, as in, companies using Sentex building access systems are wrong because they haven't removed default passwords? WTF indeed!

03/11/2009 10:18

Wow, incredible header. Nice work. That is marvelous.

03/11/2009 14:25

Just wanted to say <3 the header! You're the man now dog.

03/11/2009 14:43

Pretty use of jparallax. Hadn't thought of using it like this (instead of the more typical landscape/skyline layers).

All: Parallax effect done with Jparallax: http://webdev.stephband.info/parallax.html

Nice picture! Reminds me of South Park Colorado. I used to drive thru there all the time to get to Breckenridge from the south side of Denver. Also looks a bit like the high Sierras around Bridgeport, California.

@spaceman-spiff

Oh, that south park route. fscking boring... but at least you can hit 120 without too much worry. :)

That's really nice about the shiny, cool header and all, but let's talk about the content.

Has anyone tried this and verified that it works on any keypads? How many installers have not changed the default passwords?

I've never seen a Sentex brand key pad. What types of installations are they standard at? To which markets do they solicit the most? Apparently these keypads cost $325, so it's pretty economical.

Can anyone confirm the effectiveness of this exploit?

03/16/2009 09:11

That header is awesome!

As for the point of this article, that's an unbelieveable security issue, but I suppose people will be too stupid to reset admin passwords and such...

Where I work I have found that any combination of the letters and numbers in the door code can open it fine,
so if it was 1234, you could use 1324, 2341, 4321, 2314 etc....
Kind of stupid as it means the chance of guessing it becomes much higher...

03/17/2009 13:09

Default codes should be changed by all administrators to prevent unauthorized access. The default code is for programming only and not intended to assist others with unauthorized access.

04/05/2009 05:10

Hmm, I'll have to check that out! Nice information :)

And as so many before ... Great header-concept!

@Penis size: That insightful and to the point comment on this blog post really made me think!

04/10/2009 06:52

Such locks should come with a warning label for customers warning that the default setting must be changed before use.

05/02/2009 12:10

Hmm i will test it. Whent its work i give you a reply.

05/12/2009 05:36

you can also use ### for *** signs

05/19/2009 05:24

i take a test but it doesnt work with firefox browser

05/23/2009 12:32

Well said. Thanks for sharing!

Your header is so cool. I could play with it all day.

Like everyone else, I thought this article was pretty cool... but damn that header is awesome.

Alex
08/08/2009 10:29

I'm really confused why people are so fascinated with the header. It's just the jParallax plugin. I'm guessing a lot of you are new to the Internet.

Want something really impressive? Go look up the HTML5 canvas tag and take a look at what people are doing with it.

Okay with that outta the way, cool exploit! If only I knew of some places that used a Sentex keypad I would try this out.

Very cool header. Good work and nice idea
Thank you and greetings from Germany.

WOW
08/12/2009 15:53

Confirmed! it works! I've tested it on 2 buildings downtown and one of the passwords have not been reset. any links to the manual for the other codes? it's quite interesting.
